The city of Dimitrovgrad is situated in the centre of the Volga area. Dimitrovgrad's proximity to a number of large-scale regional centers provides its economic links with the neighbor regions. The nature of the city is its great wealth. The rivers, lakes and pools, forests and groves make its beautiful landscape and attract tourists. Dimitrovgrad has been twice granted with governmental rewards as a participant of the Best Equipped City of Volga Region federal contest. In 2004 the city got The Cultural Capital of the Volga Region status. For the time being awarding the Science City status to Dimitrovgrad is being discussed in the Government of Russia. The economics. Sole entrepreneurs make 81.6% and the state ones make a little more than 4% in the structure of the economics. The core of the economics is engineering industry, which is car industry, chemical and oil industry. The largest enterprise in the city is Dimitrovgrad Car-Unit Making Factory. It is The Volga Car Factory satellite and an adjacent enterprise to all car-producing factories in Russia. To attract additional money resources the city offers a set of investment projects to the potential investors, and the projects of the city development as a science city of the RF are also included. For the city to have a more balanced and purposeful development a Complex Program for Dimitrovgrad Social and Economic Development for 2006-2020 has been worked out and accepted. The population of the city is 127 500 and 64.7 per cent of the population are able to work. The number of those under the age of ability to work and those above the age are approximately equal. Every third working person has a diploma of higher education. There are 220 Candidates and 32 Doctors of science in scientific-research institute. The main sphere of population's employment is manufacturing. According to the official data the average monthly wage of these workers is 7 124 RUR. As for the birth and natural diminution rates, the situation in Dimitrovgrad is more favorable than in the Ulyanovsk region. At the same time the death-rate is continually growing: 2002 - 14.6, 2003 - 15.0, 2004 - 15.4, and 2005 - 15.6.
