The 4^rd International Conference “Well-being in the Information Society (WIS 2012) – Exploring the Abyss of Inequalities” will take place on 22-24 August 2012 in Turku, Finland. The conference will be organised by University of Turku – Turku School of Economics and Baltic Region Healthy Cities Association.

The core topic of WIS 2012 is health-related inequalities in daily life. Among others, vision-, hearing- and movement-impaired people have difficulties in accessing services in the modern society, including information-technology enabled services.  Yet information technology also offers a multitude of possibilities for improving the life of impaired people. Most often these solutions are well in line with the needs and benefits of everyone. WIS 2012 will review academic contributions on these topics at the intersection of health, ICT and urban way of living, all manifested in the information society context, but also room for industry and third-sector contributions is found in the program.

WIS is organized biennially. Welcome to Turku in 2014!

WIS looks for innovations and new fresh ideas in the cross-section of urban living, information society and health understood in a wide sense. The conference looks for contributions based on high-quality scientific research (research track) as well as on practical experience with the issues (industrial track). The seminar is multidisciplinary in nature, and gives room for qualitative and quantitative analysis, empirical surveys, case studies and for conceptual work. The idea is to enhance information and ideas exchange, and thus different interactive forums are a part of the WIS concept. The seminar is a place for scientists and practitioners to challenge, test and develop their thinking and actions on health enhancement in urban settings.
